CHAPTER 20

Lili was walking with Terrence through Central Park. He rubbed her engagement ring between his fingers as he held her hand. She felt his undeniable acceptance of her. They seemed to be the only two people walking that day. It was a shame, Lili thought, because it was a perfect day for a walk. Her eyes followed Terrence’s hand to his face, but she couldn’t see him. Lili looked back down at her hand and noticed no one was holding it. She quickly turned around in circles to survey the park. She was alone. She circled again until she observed a shadowy figure moving toward her, beyond the trees. Closer and closer it moved, until she saw the long flowing hair, and then the beautiful face of her mother.

Lili heard a voice in the distance beyond her mother. It was soothing to her.

“Don’t ignore it, Lili,” Abigail said softly.

“Lili,” the angel called again.

“Don’t be afraid, ma petite.”

Lili looked behind her, searching for Terrence. To her right, and then to her left, he was nowhere to be found. I’m dying, Lili thought to herself. No, I’m already dead. The only thing to do now is follow the voice.

Lili followed her mother beyond the trees. Heaven held no clouds, or angels, no beauty that she could see. Life after death was disappointing. Lili’s eyes slowly focused on a plain cold room. She slowly searched the room until she saw a figure in white.

“Where am I?” Lili whispered.

The figure in white turned toward her. “You are in the hospital. Your brother is right outside. I will let him know you are awake.”

Other than a splitting headache, she wasn’t in much pain. She credited that to whatever was dripping from her IV into her bloodstream via the needle that was stuck in her hand. Lili began to evaluate her condition. She felt tightness around her chest. She reached under the sheet and could feel tape wrapped around her. Broken ribs, she thought. She wiggled her legs and toes with relief. Lili remembered the headlights and squeezed her eyes shut. She was in the hospital, but she hadn’t sustained horrible injuries. The only thing that concerned her was Terrence. She needed to see him right away. Just as she began to panic, Gray entered the room.

“You’re awake!” He smiled as he went to her side. “Lili don’t ever do anything like that to me again. You have no idea the scene we all endured last night.” He kissed her forehead.

“How’s Terrence?” she asked.

“I took him for dead at first. He is certainly a lot more beat up than you, but he will pull through.”

“I want to see him right now, Gray,” Lili insisted as she struggled to sit up.

“Of course you do. I would love to be your accomplice in breaking all the hospital rules. I’ll get a wheelchair. Don’t move until I get back.”

With Lili’s IV hooked to the pole of her wheelchair, Grayson escorted her to Terrence’s room. The first person Lili saw was James, then Keith and Katherine, then Terrence’s parents.
